Day 6: Visit to Casa Camino Real

In the afternoon our group visited a bookstore called Casa Camino Real which is run by Denise Chavez and Daniel Zolinsky. They treated the youth to stories about local culture, and Latinx history in the area. Denise also treated the youth to Mexican coffee (a delicious blend with Mexican brown cane sugar and cinnamon) and agua de Jamaica, a hibiscus drink, along with pastries.

The kids and adults wandered through the colorful rooms, poring over the bookshelves inside the historic adobe building. In addition to some purchases, many took a free book gift. Denise has wrapped up books and on the wrapping paper written the first line in the book as a clue. Karen could not resist taking a book, the mysterious first line of which read “The meeting with the minister did not go well.”!

Here are some photos of our group, followed by information on a book drive that Denise and Daniel are conducting to help families that are arriving at the asylum center. They are happy to accept books by mail.

Such a fun and interesting couple!!
